It is with profound gratitude for a life well lived and deep sorrow at his passing that we celebrate the life of Joseph Justus Karanja (JJ).

Joseph was born on 8th March 1945 in Kiranga to the late Simeon Kimani and Beth Nduta. He was the firstborn son and eldest among his siblings: Maria Muthoni, Peris Wangari, Jacinta Wairimu, and Lucia Njoki. He was also a stepson of the late Miriam Njoki (Nyahang’i) and a beloved stepbrother to the late Joseph Karanja and Cecilia Wangui, as well as Peter Mbugua, Esther Muthoni, and Jane Wairimu.

In 1959, Joseph underwent his traditional rite of passage, an important milestone that marked his transition into adulthood and the beginning of a life characterized by responsibility, resilience, and service.

His educational journey began at Muruka Primary School, after which he joined Nyeri High School in 1961, completing his secondary education in 1964. Armed with determination and a strong work ethic, Joseph entered the workforce in 1965 as a clerk at the Kenyanization Bureau Labour Office. He later joined Gill & Johnson, now known as Deloitte Kenya, where he built a distinguished career as an accountant. Through diligence, integrity, and professionalism, he earned the respect of colleagues and friends until his retirement.

In 1970, Joseph met the love of his life, Grace Nyaguthii. Their relationship blossomed over the years, culminating in the solemnization of their marriage on 21st April 1990. Together, they built a loving home and were blessed with five children: Elizabeth Nduta, Mary Muthoni, Veronica Njoki, Peris Wangari, and Simon Kimani. He was also a cherished father-in-law to David Kimani and Martin Karanja.

Family was the center of Joseph’s life. He took immense pride in his children and grandchildren, nurturing them with wisdom, love, and unwavering support. He was a devoted grandfather to Ian Karanja, Sarah Waithera, Shanice Nyaguthii, Cynthia Wacuka, Craig Macharia, Joseph Wanjohi, Don Karanja, Baraka Kariuki, Kyle Karanja, and Shanique Wanjiru. His joy multiplied further through his great-grandchildren: Elsie Muthoni, Avianna Mugure, Eli Kimani, Arian Ngari, and Hazel Njoki.

Beyond his immediate family, Joseph was a treasured brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, mentor, and friend. His warmth, wisdom, and fatherly nature earned him the affectionate title of “Daddy” among relatives and friends alike, regardless of their age or relationship to him. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel valued, welcomed, and supported.

Joseph’s life was deeply rooted in faith. His Christian journey began at an early age when he was baptized on 22nd December 1956, received his First Holy Communion on 24th December 1956, and was confirmed on 7th July 1957. As a young man, he faithfully served the Church by teaching catechism and helping to nurture the faith of younger generations.

His commitment to the Church remained steadfast throughout his life. He was a founding member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church Buruburu, formerly known as St. Joseph Catholic Church, and played a significant role in its growth and development. He was also a founding member of the Catholic Men Association, where he served faithfully, including several years as Assistant Treasurer. In addition, he was an active member of the St. Francis of Assisi Jumuiya, contributing greatly to the spiritual growth and unity of the community. His faith was not merely professed—it was lived daily through service, humility, and devotion.

Those who knew Joseph will remember him as a man of unwavering integrity, quiet strength, and deep compassion. He was generous with his time, wise in his counsel, and steadfast in his commitment to family and community. He was a pillar upon whom many leaned, a trusted friend who offered encouragement, and a source of guidance whose wisdom touched countless lives.

Joseph Justus Karanja leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, humility, and service. His influence lives on in the values he instilled in his family, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness and generosity.

Today, as we bid farewell to our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend, we do so with gratitude for the gift of his life. Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we take comfort in the memories he leaves behind and the enduring legacy of love and faith that will continue to inspire us.

Fare thee well, our beloved Daddy, Father, Babu, and friend.

As a family, we are making arrangements to give our beloved father a dignified and befitting send-off. During this difficult time, we humbly appeal for your prayers, support, and financial assistance as we prepare to honor his life and legacy.

No contribution is too small, and every act of kindness will be deeply appreciated and will go a long way in helping us accord him the farewell he deserves.

Family and friends are meeting daily at his residence in Buruburu Phase 1, House 347, Munderendu Court, from 6:00 p.m.

The Requiem Mass will be held on Friday, 5th June, at 4:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Buruburu Phase 1.

The burial service will take place on Tuesday, 9th June, at Mbuko Village, Kiranga.

We thank you for your continued prayers, support, and solidarity during this period of mourning.

Though we never interacted I saw the kind of dad you were by virtue of your children.
